New Cannabis Compound: THCP
The compound, THCP, may be up to 30 times stronger than the THC we already know of!
What is THCP?
We may have a new understanding of cannabis due to a newly discovered cannabinoid. And the coolest part? It’s a stronger version of weed’s most famous compound: THC.
The latest issue of Nature published the findings of Italian researchers earlier this week. Researchers studied a strain of medical marijuana grown exclusively by Italy's military, known as FM2, and identified and isolated a previously unknown cannabinoid called tetrahydrocannabiphorol.

THCP, the chemical in marijuana that causes intoxication, is almost identical to THC except for a few extra carbon atoms at the end of the molecule. Weed compounds directly interact with the body's cells via CB1, CB2, and THCP's extra carbon atoms in order to heal or get high.
THCP Receptors: CB1 CB2
According to the study, THCP binds much stronger to the CB1 and CB2 receptors than THC does. In fact, THCP binds over 30 times stronger to the CB1 receptor — the receptor that triggers weed’s high — than THC.
THCP was given to mice at half the standard THC dosage, which was 5mg/kg. Researchers found this dosage was sufficient to intoxicate the rodents. As THCP has not yet been administered to human subjects, it is unclear whether it will actually make people more lit.
So, what does this discovery mean for our understanding of cannabis and its medical applications?
Researchers wrote in the study that other cannabis varieties may contain even higher levels of *9-THCP. Moreover, despite an equal dose of *9-THC, there is an astonishing variability in subject responses to a cannabis-based therapy."

In other words, different people experience effects from weed in part due to the presence of different cannabinoids, terpenes, or flavonoids that we still don't fully understand about. We have probably been smoking, eating, vaping, and dabbing THCP for years without even realizing it.
